Neutral gray is not a simple black and white mixture, but a light source response curve equivalent to all visible spectra, and the reflection energy of each color is equal. If we measure the spectral curve of neutral gray with a spectrophotometer, we can see a horizontal line that is almost equal at all wavelengths. Non-neutral grey may have a hue shift in the spectrum under different lighting conditions, resulting in cool or warm tones. The neutral gray paint provides an ideal diffuse reflective surface and provides an ideal test environment for normal camera exposure during testing.
