Introduction to TOF Camera Test Solutions

At present, Depth or Range camera’s technology have been developed for several years and available for certain applications for about a decade. For example, autonomous driving is using TOF Camera solutions to improve safety and expand the range of cameras, like machine vision and robotics. Such cameras can also help any machines and robots accurately evaluate the scenes in front of them. Also 3D modeling-related applications such as Face recognition, object restoration, etc., more and more view can be used in depth cameras.

Classifications of Depth Camera

Common depth imaging solutions come in three broad categories, 3D structured light, TOF technology, and binocular. However, at present, the advantages and disadvantages of different infrared imaging schemes are still obvious. Consumers are most concerned about applications. Currently, structured light applications mainly include face modeling, face recognition, mobile payment, and role creation. With the continuous advancement of TOF technology, TOF cameras have basically the ability to realize 3D face recognition, and the face can be recognized by occupying more than a certain pixel.

Product Introduction

The following explanation is a fully automatic camera test system solution, developed by ColorSpace Co. Ltd and Sofica, Finland. It is specially designed for depth camera test. One system can be compatible with visible light camera, TOF camera and binocular system. It can realize high-precision distance positioning, shooting position and angle positioning, complete multi-camera, multiple lighting conditions and self-test of different test cards. The following figure is a schematic diagram of the test system:

This test scenario can be used to analyze the following quality parameters of a depth camera: 1. Camera Distance: minimum and maximum measurable distance 2. Measurement accuracy: average error from true distance 3. Different reflectivity/ transmittance/ color/ material/ illumination on the measurement accuracy 4. The influence of the tilt angle of the measured object on the measurement accuracy 5. Spatial noise and time domain noise 6· The number and distribution of invalid pixels at the edge 7· Spatial resolution 8· The impact of ambient lighting 9· And many subjective scene tests, etc.

Based on the various parameters to be tested, you can configure a variety of auxiliary Test Chart, test elements, and scene models (some of the commonly used test charts and models are listed below)

The system can effectively realize the automatic test of each parameter, which is based on the characteristics of Sofica automatic test system:

1. Automatic alignment of the camera Sensor with the test chart (parallel, center alignment, rotation, fine adjustment of front and rear position, etc.).

2. Accurate control of shooting distance and position with an accuracy of 0.01~0.1 mm.

3. Multiple test charts can be automatically switched: resolution test chart, different reflectivity test card, 3D checkerboard, etc.

4. The light source controls itself, the closed-loop adjusts the illumination, and switches the infrared channel as well.

5. The surrounding space can be added with multiple real-life test positions according to the application scenario. Each position can be added with positioning marks to achieve accurate repeat positioning of all positions.

6. Multiple cameras can be switched automatically, and one part is automatically switched to the next.

7. Automatically generate test reports.

8. Support for open APIs, third-party algorithm integration. In order to ensure that these systems operate stably and efficiently, it is critical to test the functionality and image quality of the entire imaging system.
